Short Story - 1808 Words
Castiel fiddles with the zipper on his computer bag. The woman next to him huffs, then finally slides out of her seat when a gentleman gives her the space to enter the aisle. No one bothers to do the same for Castiel, but thatââ¬â¢s fine. Heââ¬â¢ll wait. The longer he can put this off, the better. But time marches on, and eventually the aisle is clear, the stewardsââ¬â¢ smiles are strained, and Castiel has no choice but to walk out of the plane and step onto that peculiar Portland Airport carpet. His heart is pounding in his throat, in his head, as he makes his way past the line of shops toward security, towards the lobby, towards Dean. Itââ¬â¢s nervousness, certainly, from their recent fight. But the closer Castiel gets to lobby, the easier it is toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re dressed like me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Kind of.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. You probably paid for those holes in your jeans. I earned mine.â⬠Castiel rolls his eyes and runs his hand th rough his hair again. Dean watches the gesture, smirking like he knows something Castiel doesnââ¬â¢t, and thatââ¬â¢s entirely possible. Castielââ¬â¢s not new to rebellion, but he is new to showcasing it with mohawks and hair dye and yes, expensive pre-torn jeans. Heââ¬â¢s nineteen now, and for the first time in his life, heââ¬â¢s almost completely out from under his familyââ¬â¢s shadow. His parents pay his rent and give him an allowance for other expenses, but otherwise, heââ¬â¢s freer than heââ¬â¢s ever been. The professors at Northwestern wonââ¬â¢t call his mother if he skips class once in awhile. He doesnââ¬â¢t get scolded and sent to the office for being off-uniform, and the other students donââ¬â¢t care if his personal clothes are brand name. His new friendsââ¬â¢ parents are accountants and secretaries and salesmen, not actors and athletes. That whole world was so overwhelmingly new that Castiel could only enjoy it by trying to be someone new . He figured out pretty early on that he can only be who he is. Frat parties and piercings and sex with girls canââ¬â¢t change that. But he likes this look. He likes not fitting in with the rest of his family. He likes t-shirts and jeans and cheap, colorful shoes made out of cloth. And while Dean is still studying him like a difficult math problem, thereââ¬â¢s affection and heat in that gaze, so maybe heââ¬â¢s not the only oneShow MoreRelatedshort story1018 Words à |à 5 Pagesï » ¿Short Stories:à à Characteristics â⬠¢Shortà - Can usually be read in one sitting. â⬠¢Concise:à à Information offered in the story is relevant to the tale being told.à à This is unlike a novel, where the story can diverge from the main plot â⬠¢Usually tries to leave behind aà single impressionà or effect.à à Usually, though not always built around one character, place, idea, or act. â⬠¢Because they are concise, writers depend on the reader bringingà personal experiencesà andà prior knowledgeà to the story.
